Routing:
1st day: Individual arrival at the southern end of Lake Traunsee - to Ebensee
In the charmingly situated holiday resort, the Traun flows into the Traunsee on its way between the Totes Gebirge and Höllengebirge mountain ranges. The Ebensee Bay on the southern shore of Lake Traunsee offers optimal conditions for water sports enthusiasts under sail in the warm season. On a tour of the salt village and along the banks of Lake Traunsee, you can watch surfers perform their tricks.
At the hotel you will receive your detailed travel documents.
(1 night in Ebensee).
2nd day: Pleasure hike from the Offensee to the Almsee
From the Traun Valley, an approximately 9-kilometer-long serpentine road winds its way through the wild gorge of the Offenseebach up to the Offensee in the Totes Gebirge. A transfer will be provided for this first stage of the day, because the way to the Almsee is still long. The surrounding mountains are spectacularly reflected in the Offensee, which lies on the north side of the Totes Gebirge. Now follow the European long-distance hiking trail E4 and enjoy various reflections of the mountains in the still lake; finally the path winds up to the Gschirrsattel, and the biggest ascent is already done. Below the Weißhorn, you enter the valley of the Weißeneggbach, which stretches into the Almtal. Always along the high path you reach the natural Almsee, which is completely under nature conservation. This beautifully situated mountain lake - like an emerald - is drained by the river Alm, whose course we are allowed to follow to the accommodation in Grünau via transfer.
(2 nights in Grünau i. Almtal)
Hike: 6 hours (approx. 17 km, ascent: 695 m in height / descent: 776 m in height)
3rd day: In the 'Valley of the Birds'
Today is free and offers a variety of activities in the Almtal. The Alm is considered one of the cleanest rivers in Austria, hardly regulated. The Nobel Prize winner Konrad Lorenz once conducted behavioural studies on greylag geese here. Even today, rare bird and plant species live in the Almtal. The Cumberland Wildlife Park, which is well worth seeing, is good to visit. During an extensive walk through the grounds, there are opportunities to observe many native animal species. As an excursion tip, a visit to the FischAlm is also recommended, where a freshly caught fish on a stick can be enjoyed.
4th day: Along the S-Trail
From Grünau you follow the alpine pasture on the raftsman's path, past a weir, through the riverside forest. At the Kothmühle you leave the alpine pasture and follow the path over meadows and hamlets. Finally, the path branches off in a serpentine shape over forest and meadow slopes until you finally reach the height, where it continues steadily to Lake Laudachsee. Before you reach the swampy north shore of the small mountain lake, the view opens up as you step out of the forest to the mighty Traunstein and the somewhat smaller Katzenstein. In a pretty panoramic position above the lake lies the Ramsaualm, which invites you to stop and rest. A forest nature trail continues to the Grünberg, which is also the local mountain of the people of Gmunden and a popular excursion destination. From here there is the possibility to take the cable car directly into the valley. Alternatively, you can descend via the village of Weyer with the castle of the same name to Gmunden. Now it's done, because the tram leads from Traunsee to Gmunden station and takes the train back to Ebensee.
(1 night in Ebensee)
Hike: 6-7 hours (approx. 23,5 km, ascent: 673 m in height / descent: 775 m in height)
5th day: Individual departure or additional nights
If you have booked an extended stay, a walk along the brine pipeline path or - if you want to get the mountains up close again - a visit to the Langbathseen with a jump into the water, not far from Ebensee, would be a good idea. But if you prefer to visit the Feuerkogel in the Höllengebirge, you can immerse yourself in a magnificent plateau with alpine pastures and a mountain flora that is second to none at an altitude of about 1500 meters.
Otherwise, you will return home today.
