The town square has a remarkably cohesive appearance and is still largely surrounded by houses whose roots go back a long way
On the town square and along the main street, we mainly see two and three-storey farmhouses on elongated medieval plots that characterise the town. Many of these houses still have numerous late medieval elements, but there was a lot of rebuilding and new construction in the second half of the 16th century and the first half of the 17th century, especially after the great town fire in 1642. The Old Town Hall with the historic Grein Municipal Theatre (1791) and the former shipmaster's house with its arcaded courtyard are particularly worth seeing.
