Bourgeois families from Neumarkt i.H. erected five wooden rosary chapels on the Calvary, which until then had been called "Galgenberg" or "Galgenholzflur" or "Galingholz". The Benedictine Father Felix from Lambach rebuilt the 5th wooden chapel in 1720, which was already damaged at the time. In 1731, the judge and council of Neumarkt i.H. bought a piece of land from Uhrl in Kledt to build a brick church on the Calvary.
The first mass was celebrated on 19 June 1738 by Father Felix from Lambach, who also supervised the construction of the church. The first chapel and the last chapel were built later. The chapels are now owned by various citizens of Neumarkt.
The main altar of the Calvary Church - the crucifixion group - was made by a Schwanthaler (according to a church invoice). The side altars depict St Leonhard and St Notburga.
