Hauptplatz Freistadt

The main square of the medieval brewing town of Freistadt, which was laid out in the 13th century, is around 6,500 square metres in size and is the centre of the old town.

The main square is a large, rectangular square measuring around 6500 square metres in Freistadt in the Upper Austrian Mühlviertel region. The square was laid out when the town was founded in the 13th century and lies within the city walls of the old town. The main square is the centre of the town and has always served as a marketplace; the Pauli market has been held here since the 15th century. Today, the square offers parking spaces for 90 cars and in summer space for several pavement cafés of the neighbouring inns.

In addition to the parish church, there are 23 listed buildings around the main square. In the two great town fires of 1507 and 1516, all of the town's houses were destroyed, including those in this area. As a result of the town fires, many old documents from the time the houses were built have been lost.
