Lake Matt is around 36 hectares in size and up to 42 metres deep. The name is derived from the Mattig River and probably comes from the Celtic language.
It is up to 4.2 kilometres long and up to 1.5 kilometres wide. Like all three Trumer Seen lakes, Mattsee was formed after the Ice Age as a tongue basin lake. Embedded in gentle hills and lush meadows, it is a nature reserve, just like the other two Trumer Seen lakes.
