The romantic pilgrimage town of Brunnenthal is located near baroque Schärding.
In 1640 Georg Auer, farmer in Haraberg, learned that the water from his fountain had healing powers: after drinking it he all of a sudden was healed from the painful joint disease that came with constant weight loss. Before this miracle healing Auer had several dreams in which he himself standing in front of a cross or a martyr column. To express his gratitude for his speedy recovery he had such a monument built next to the fountain. From this day on the fountain became a popular site with pilgrims from near and far.
