The via ferrate dragonwall (Drachenwand) in St. Lorenz was opened to climbers and mountaineers in 2009. ATTENTION: not suitable for children, teenagers and inexperienced climbers!!
The route runs over solid rocks along the eastern grade to the summit of the Drachenwand. The total lenght of the via ferrata is 600m and ascends 400 meters. Fixed steel cables and rope ladders secure the difficult route (degree of difficulty 60% B, 40% C some D). The lenght of the route and the stamina required should not be underestimated.
Appropriate safety equipment is therefore a must and can be rented at the entrance to the trail. Please do not enter when the weather is bad or is about to change. Do not underestimate the descent which can be very exhausting as well and note that on the via ferrata there is no possibility to exit meaning once in the via ferrata you have to reach the peak.
The summit of the Drachenwand offers a fantastic vantage point in clear weather to see the surrounding mountains and lakes in Salzkammergut.
The via ferrata Drachenwand and especially the descent require alpine experience and sufficient physical condition. The descent is an alpine climb of the highest level of difficulty! Sure-footedness, a head for heights and alpine experience on climbs of the highest level of difficulty, as well as adequate equipment, are the basic requirements for starting the via ferrata. You have only conquered the dragon wall when you are safely back in the valley. Unfortunately, climbers die every year on the descent. The main reason is overconfidence, the thought "I've already done the via ferrata, what should be ...", lack of condition and equipment. Please spare our relief organizations, especially the great volunteer members of the Mondseeland mountain rescue, from these stressful operations. Please estimate at least 4 hours for your tour. Last access to the via ferrata is 5 hours before sunset. Do not undertake the tour when it is wet. The via ferrata is not suitable for children under the age of 14 or beyond that without sufficient alpine experience!
The tours presented here are suggested tours that are provided free of charge. After agreeing to the terms of the disclaimer you receive detailed information such as altitude profiles, route plans, and an option for downloading files etc.
