Borderland tour no. 905

As the name suggests, this tour leads along the Maltschstraße along the state border with the Czech Republic. The tour starts at the market square in Leopoldschlag;

After around 1.5 km, keep left and cycle along the Maltsch for around 4 km. Make a stop at the "Rauschenden Felsen" and enjoy the natural spectacle. A few hundred metres further on is the Czech Republic-Austria border crossing with a connection to the Eurovelo 13 cycle route. Enjoy the beautiful natural landscape and pause briefly to listen to the murmur of the Maltsch. After 8 kilometres parallel to the R5 cycle path, you reach Windhaag near Freistadt and turn right towards Gasthaus zum Waldlehrpfad, from where you continue to Ober- and Unterpaßberg. You can also extend your tour on the cycle path no. 906 "Viehberg-Maltsch-Radroute" with 23 km from/to Windhaag.
You cycle around 7 km to Kerschbaum on quiet side roads with distant views of the hills and through woodland, where you can listen to birdsong. Once you arrive in Kerschbaum, you can make a stop at the Museum Pferdeeisenbahn (check the opening times). At the Kerschbaumer Sattel, rejoin the R5 and continue for about 5 km towards the Eisenhut border crossing. Approximately 1 km before the border crossing, we head back towards Leopoldschlag near the Wullowitz border crossing. Here you can take another break at the Gasthaus Franzosenhof. The last section leads through the nature reserve along the European Green Belt. After around 2.5 kilometres, you will reach Leopoldschlag again.
