Long-distance trail Attersee-Attergau Stage 2 Nußdorf - Unterach

The second stage of the Attersee-Attergau long-distance hiking trail leads partly high above Lake Attersee through shady forests and magnificent meadows to the natural jewel Egelsee and the sweet chestnut forest above Unterach.

Starting out from the tourist office in Dorfstraße, Nußdorf, get back on the Wildholzweg and walk up through the village green and the upper village, turn left towards Pfarrer-Salettl (wonderful view over the village and across the lake to the Höllengebirge mountain range). Continue on the marked Attersee-Westwanderweg taking you through forest slopes and below Reiter Gupf to the restaurant Dachsteinblick. In clear weather, this place keeps what its name promises and you can really see all the way to Dachstein (Upper Austria’s highest mountain and glacier).

Descending leftward you reach the asphalted Limbergstraße on which you continue towards the right and uphill for about 200m. Below the Limberg farm, there is another descent leftwards along Dexelbach stream towards the forest’s edge above the settlement Zell. Continue rightwards, walking up and down above the lake, across the Parschallenbach stream to the scattered farmhouses of Ramsau, above the neighbourhood Stockwinkel. From there, you can make a small detour to the legendary ‘Berimandl Stoa’, where about 100 different nut trees were planted. Continuing on the Westwanderweg you will shortly arrive at another asphalted street and the branch-off to Reiserbauernmühle, a mill dating back to the 17th century (a rewarding detour of 45 minutes to get there and return).

You now walk down for 150m towards the lake and then turn right next to a small gravel pit onto the forest road Promberg (signindicating ‘Egelsee, Unterach’). At the edge of the forest, take to the left, then right onto a path leading into the bed of the Urfangbach stream, across the stream and uphill to the farmhouse Modlinger. Continue downwards on the asphalted access road, turn right towards the farmhouse Hausmann and above that turn into the hiking path to Egelsee branching off to the left.

From the southern banks of the strictly protected bog waters you continue on a gravel road over a meadow to the Holzberg farmhouse. On the way, you take twice to the right, then take the hiking path leftwards to the panoramic hotel and restaurant Druckerhof. Continue on a field path into the forested eastern slope of Hochplettspitze mountain, then downwards to Kohlbauern and into the Menerweg neighbourhood. After a short loop towards the right and across a ditch, you finally arrive and turn right into Atterseestraße which you follow for about 170m (direction Unterach). After the bridge across Schneiderbach stream, the sign ‘Waldlehrpfad‘ (nature trail) points to the right into the sweet chestnut forest of Unterach.

From the first stretch of the nature trail, you take to the left and walk down to the bypass road. Cross it and walk through Leitnergasse into the village centre of Unterach am Attersee.
