Now hike along the gravel road out of the Ödern Valley. To the left, the Lawinenstein (Lowean, 1965 m) rises above the Fleckl Moor, while the central plateau of the Totes Gebirge Mountains looms to the right. After approximately 3.5 kilometres, you arrive at the small wooden hut at the so-called Rechenplatz (1088 m), where the Ödern Valley widens a little. 1:45 h
At the fork there, stay left in the valley. After 250 metres, you reach another fork, where you turn right (trail marker “Schneckenalm, Gößl”, no. 272). From the end of the gently ascending forest road, go right after 1 kilometre on the marked path to the Schneckenalm Meadow 04 (1152 m).
From the top alpine hut, a rough road leads through the flat, forest-free area “Auf dem Berg” to a forest road running crosswise. Walk several steps to the right on this road, then follow an old track to the left into the forest (watch for markers and stone mounds). Soon you hike downhill until the path joins a forest road just past a hut. Go briefly right and then left on a path, continuing downhill to the Gößl Meadow. From there you descend along a street to Lake Grundlsee and turn right – passing a swimming area and Gasthaus Rostiger Anker – to Gößl (720 m). Additional inns and accommodations can be found to the right in the village. 2:45 h.
For all stages, you will need hiking or mountain boots with treaded rubber soles as well as wind- and rainproof clothing. A change of clothes and a small first-aid kit should also be included in your backpack. The amount of provisions you should pack depends on the number of available rest stops. In any case, you should always take along plenty to drink. Telescopic poles are helpful, especially when walking downhill.
