Short description:
Demanding traverse in a high alpine karst landscape on narrow and rocky, in places also exposed and secured paths that require surefootedness, a head for heights, good physical condition and alpine experience. Beware of hard frozen snow fields - danger of falling! Start only in safe weather - in fog, driving snow and fresh snow you can easily get lost in the monotonous terrain.

Description:
"Through the desert" - that could be the motto for this stage. For one day, you'll pass through a kind of lunar landscape of limestone, remote and waterless, so take enough to drink! In stable good weather, this tour is a wonderful nature experience, where you can also discover many flowers despite the barren ground. In the fog, however, you really quickly end up in nowhere there!

Directions:
From the Adamek Hut, first descend on the access trail No. 614 to the Hoher Riedel (2,035 m). There you branch off to the right onto trail no. 650, which climbs under the wall abruptions of the Schreiberwandeck (2,330 m) to large, fallen boulders. Behind it, you branch off to the right and hike into the huge rock cirque below the small Schneeloch glacier, which is divided by hollows and small rock bands.

For more than 1 km you cross this remote cirque (with a dream view to the Gosaukamm) until you reach the Hoßwandscharte (2,187 m). 2:00h Beyond follows a short descent through rocky terrain, then it goes under the Hoßkogel (2,366 m) to the right and - laboriously - over craggy Karrenplatten into the Weittal (here special caution, because steep old snow fields exist into the summer).

This cirque also shows enormous dimensions and is divided in the middle by the small but pointed Weittal-Gschlösselkogel (2,168 m). Below the Hoher Ochsenkogel begins the switchbacked ascent over two exposed steep steps, secured with iron clamps and steel ropes, to the Hoher Trog (2,359 m). On this wide scree saddle you cross the path that leads to the left to the Mittlerer Ochsenkogel (2,365 m) and to the right to the Niederes Kreuz (2,651 m).

The descent to the east leads steeply over scree, cart rocks and rock slabs - a short spot is secured with a rope - into the extensive Wildkar. North below the small, sugar loaf-shaped Schöberl (2,426 m) you hike to Simonyhütte (2,205 m). 3:00 h

Interesting is the detour to the Upper Eissee below the Hallstatt Glacier (1:30 - 2:00 h).crossing the Taubenkogel (2,300 m).

Safety guidelines:

  •  In alpine terrain, pay attention to the danger of falling rocks.

  • Until early summer you can encounter steep snowfields or firn gullies - especially in icy conditions there is then an acute danger of falling and thus of death!

  • Due to storm damage, forestry work or construction work, individual sections of the trail may be temporarily difficult or impossible to pass.

  • Cows on the alp are often curious. Because they are mother cows, they develop a strong drive to protect their calves. Therefore, move quietly on cow pastures, keep at least 20 m distance to the animals and do not stroke calves under any circumstances! In case of threatening gestures (pawing, stamping) slowly move away backwards (do not turn your back). Dogs on a leash, they must not bark at cows or even chase them. In the event of an attack, it is essential to let them off the leash.

Equipment:
For all stages you will need hiking or mountain boots with a treaded rubber sole as well as wind- and rainproof clothing.

A change of clothes and a small first-aid kit should also be in your backpack. How much food you pack depends on the number of stops you make. In any case, you should take enough to drink. Telescopic poles are especially helpful when going downhill.
