Description:
A short ascent and a long downhill hike that once again shows all the diversity of the Salzkammergut mountains.

Directions:
From the Steyrerhütte, hike up on trail no. 433 into the large alpine hollow below the Kasberg and the Schwalbenmauer. Climbing left, you reach the hill in front of the Roßschopf (1,647 m), the southern pre-summit of the massif (great view of the Großer Priel towering directly opposite). To the right over the green ridge to the large metal cross that crowns the Kasberg (1,747 m). 1:00 h Descent on trail no. 431 over the gently sloping northeast ridge overgrown with mountain pines to a junction. Continue descending on the left between doline hollows and craggy cart slabs. Through a mountain pine alley you reach the not particularly difficult "key passage" (steel ropes) on the left. Continue under the west ridge and turn right into the lift area around the Sepp Huber hut (1,506 m).

The onward path to the Hochberghaus leads to the nearby hollow with the reservoir, then on a hiking trail over the hill of Benn Nock (1,500 m) and then on a gravel road (ski slope) in the vicinity of the cable car down to the Farrenau hunting lodge (1,180 m). Pass another reservoir on the left, descend through the eastern side of the Farrenaubühel (1,287 m) and to the inviting Hochberghaus (1,132 m). 2:30 h The descent path No. 431 in the direction of Grünau now shortens a curve of the Farrenau mountain road, follows it down to the right and then moves left over a forest ridge downhill. Soon it goes right through the steep slopes below the Scheiterwiedberg - crossing some forest roads down to a meadow (780 m). There turn left and go downhill near the ski slope to the forest road, where you reach the Schindlbachstraße in the valley. Turn left to the parish church of Grünau im Almtal (528 m), where stage 22 of the Salzkammergut BergeSeen Trail ends and the 23rd stage begins. 2:00 h

Tip:
Note: Bus connection (line 535) between Grünau im Almtal and the Jagersimmerl.

Safety guidelines:

  • In alpine terrain, pay attention to the danger of falling rocks.

  • Until early summer you can encounter steep snowfields or firn gullies - especially in icy conditions there is then an acute danger of falling and thus of death!

  • Due to storm damage, forestry work or construction work, individual sections of the trail may be temporarily difficult or impossible to pass.

  • Cows on the alp are often curious. Because they are mother cows, they develop a strong drive to protect their calves. Therefore, move quietly on cow pastures, keep at least 20 m distance to the animals and do not stroke calves under any circumstances! In case of threatening gestures (pawing, stamping) slowly move away backwards (do not turn your back). Dogs on a leash, they must not bark at cows or even chase them. In the event of an attack, it is essential to let them off the leash.

Equipment:
For all stages you will need hiking or mountain boots with a treaded rubber sole as well as wind- and rainproof clothing.

A change of clothes and a small first-aid kit should also be in your backpack. How much food you pack depends on the number of stops you make. In any case, you should take enough to drink. Telescopic poles are especially helpful when going downhill.
