Prominent towns and quiet forests, stately farms and old churches, beautiful vantage points and a nostalgic railway – you will experience all of this during your hike on Stage 1 of the regional trail around Lake Attersee. Along the way, you can not only stop for a bite to eat, but also take a break for a swim or two.
At the edge of the forest, turn left onto the forest path that leads to Ginzkeyweg. Continue right on this path – and soon turning right again – through the forest and past the Ginzkey Monument. Now follow the signs for the Attersee-Westwanderweg trail, which passes behind the Litzlberger Keller and then continues west – sometimes on side streets and sometimes on field, forest or meadow paths – from Litzlberg am Attersee.
This will bring you to the 16th century church of the small community of Buchberg (487 m). There you follow the state highway for 350 metres to the right until you turn right again onto the Westwanderweg path. Careful! In this area, there is a detour in the trail. Passing the community of Weinberg, you arrive at the hamlet of Haining. Turn left there, go past the riding hall to the edge of the neighbourhood of Berg. Go left at approximately 800 metres above sea level through the forest slopes of the Buchberg Mountain. From the so-called Schlossberg, the route descends to Attersee am Attersee (496 m). 2:30 h
From there, you walk to the train station of the narrow-gauge Attersee Railway, whose tracks run alongside a narrow path to Palmsdorf. Behind the village, continue alongside the railway line to the motorway bridge. Turn left immediately past it and walk through the community of Lohen. Finally, turn right on Wildenhager and take Römerstraße into the centre of St. Georgen im Attergau (540 m). 1:00 h
Head back to Römerstraße, which you take to the edge of town. Then continue walking approximately 2 kilometres along the following asphalted farm road and pass underneath the motorway once more. Behind the underpass, in the hamlet of Buch, you must be careful: at an inconspicuous bike and bridle path arrow, you turn left in order to take the gravel road and the subsequent field path between the meadows to Wildenhag (593 m). Turn right there and continue alongside Kronberg-Bezirksstraße and past the Hotel Waldmühle. Then turn right onto Glücksweg (Mahlweg) and hike up through the forest to the “Kronbergplatzl” with the partly shingled Kronberg Chapel (705 m). From there you can enjoy a beautiful view over the Attergau to Lake Attersee (telescope). 2:00 h
The trail marker “RW Kronberg” forks there in two directions – you briefly follow the street uphill to the snack station Hollerweger and then turn left in the right-hand bend onto the second side street to the Kronberg rising to the south. After a short climb, the route continues right along a forest road, through ravines passing below the summit (789 m) and over the forested southeastern ridge to the open Wienerroith (771 m, beautiful view of Lake Attersee). There it’s a few steps to the left along the access street to the buildings until the marked hiking trail to Nußdorf begins on the left. The trail descends along the edge of the meadow and through steep forest terrain. Finally, you take the Wildholzweg to arrive in Nußdorf am Attersee (500 m). 2:00 h
For all stages, you will need hiking or mountain boots with treaded rubber soles as well as wind- and rainproof clothing. A change of clothes and a small first-aid kit should also be included in your backpack. The amount of provisions you should pack depends on the number of available rest stops. In any case, you should always take along plenty to drink. Telescopic poles are helpful, especially when walking downhill.
