Short description:

Fast-paced trail run up the iconic mountain on Lake Wolfgangsee in the beautiful Salzkammergut! The Zwölferhorn is popular in both summer and winter due to its magnificent views and numerous possibilities. The 12erHornTrail combines the most beautiful viewpoints with an extensive circular tour across the summit.

Recommended season:
  • May
  • June
  • July
  • August
  • September
  • October

Properties:
  • Loop

Description:

The ascent from the main road is rather unknown but extremely rewarding. It's a nice, hilly route with short, steeper sections and for the most part quite runnable past the Lärchenhütte. Afterwards, a super flowy crossing that first climbs slightly and then more steeply to Pillsteinhöhe. After a loop to enjoy the panorama, the route leads directly to the Zwölferhorn. The following downhill is a quick run for those who want to go down across the meadows. This is followed by a longer, technical downhill section towards St. Gilgen, which is incredibly fun (even more so when it's dry ;-)). Don't miss the turn-off afterwards and run a few extra meters in altitude to the most beautiful viewpoint in the area, the Mozartblick, before the loop closes.

Directions:

There is a small parking lot on the right-hand side of the B158 just before St. Gilgen. There the tour starts past the Hochlackenhof in the direction of Kühleiten. After Kühleiten a short stretch along the road then turn right onto the trail towards Stubneralm. After the long crossing past the alp and continue on the forest road towards Pillstein. Keep right on the path towards the summit and continue with a loop over the summit and along the ridge past the Arnikahütte directly to the Zwölferhorn. The path leads from the wide path directly up to the summit. Keep right here and descend along the ridge via the Elferstein to the Sausteigalm and on to the Lärchenhütte. Then descend keeping right towards St. Gilgen. As soon as you cross the forest road for the second time, stay on it and continue until you reach two houses on the Waldhäuslweg. Cross the trail on the left before the houses and follow it to the Mozartblick viewpoint. From there, continue a little further up to the fork in the trail. Finally, turn right at the fork and continue down to the parking lot
