Bike & Hike Rettenbach - Rießriegl - Spannriegl - Koppen

Varied, leisurely hike on the border of the Kalkalpen National Park to an abandoned farm, the Spannriegl.

BIKE: This leisurely cycle tour starts at the Windischgarsten sports ground and follows the Kalkalpen National Park cycle path (R31) past Roßleithen railway station and through the district of Rading. Shortly afterwards, leave the cycle path and turn right into the idyllic Rettenbachtal valley, where you will reach the changing point at the Hinterer Rettenbach car park (NO charging facilities!) after approx. 30 minutes and 6 km.

HIKE: Starting from the Hinterer Rettenbach car park, hike a little way out of the valley. At the fork in the path, turn left over the Rettenbach onto a forest path. However, you soon leave this and change to a forest road - past the Stadler farmhouse to the turn-off onto hiking trail 26 towards Spannriegl, just before the Rießriegl farm.
The old Spannriegl farm - now owned by the Austrian Federal Forests -  is idyllically situated between gnarled fruit trees and a deer feeding station. Continue through a short ditch to the "Koppen" and from there on a little-used road back to the starting point (the Kalkalpen National Park cycle path R31 also runs here in parts).
