The Kampermauer climbing area offers around 300 well-secured routes in difficulty grades 3 to 9. The special feature is the wall height of around 450m with many multi-pitch routes and the associated alpine character.
The base of the wall is at 800 to 860 metres above sea level

Difficulty: from 3 to 9, most of the sport climbing routes up to 6

Rock structure: steep, mostly vertically layered slab limestone, sometimes also underlying dolomite limestone. The different rock structures result in many different climbing forms: large-grip handhold routes (Vegetarierkante sector), vertical ledge climbs (Ekstase sector), small-grip breccia rock (Palatschinke sector), hole climbs (Schweizer Kas sector), intersections (Malikbu sector), chimneys, hand, fist and body cracks (Hinkelstein, Fledermaus, Super-Diagonale sectors) and smooth slabs (Schmetterlingsplatte sector)

orientation: mostly south to south-east; the two left-hand sections Fledermaus and Schweizer Kas face west;

Best time of year: spring to autumn; however, due to the south-facing location, climbing is often also possible in winter (caution: increased risk of falling rocks and ice!)

Equipment: Helmet is highly recommended, as you may also be climbing above you, 70m rope and at least 10 quickdraws

Nature conservation: The Kampermauer is located in the Kalkalpen National Park. Therefore, please observe the climbing ban for some areas from April to June and be considerate of the cliff swallows that nest there.

The Kampermauer is also one of Marlies Czerny / hochzweimedia's favourite crags. HERE you can find hers - a true declaration of love

Starting point: A path leads from the climbing car park to the base of the wall in 5 to 10 minutes.

  • Hop off description: There is also a via ferrata on the Kampermauer, "Geiler Hengst", with difficulty levels D/E to E. However, this entry is actually about sport and alpine via ferrata climbing.
Accessibility / arrival

By car or (e-)bike
From Windischgarsten, take the Hengstpass road to Rosenau and continue to the top of the pass. After another 2.5 km, after the Karlhütte and the Puglalm, you will reach the Laussabaueralm on the right. Park there or - even better - on the left opposite at the climbing car park. From the car park, it's less than 10 minutes to the foot of the wall.

You can charge your e-bike for free at the National Park information point at the top of the pass.

Public transport
The Rufbus 435 runs between Windischgarsten and the top of the Hengstpass. An easy hiking trail (6 km) leads from the top of the pass to the climbing park (see Luchs Trail stage 2)
