The loop starts at Gasthof Hoisn. Here you take a slight left up a path that soon flattens out and can be walked uphill if you wish. Follow the alpine path towards Grünberg, where you can catch an impressive view of the Traunstein before continuing along forest roads. In warm weather, it is still quite pleasant and shady here. At the Holzknecht shelter, take the turn-off to the right to Laudachsee. It goes downhill for a while and then you are right next to the small mountain lake. The view of the Katzenstein opposite is particularly beautiful from here. If you have poles with you, you should pack them out now at the latest, as the path at the end of the lake is quite steep up to the high saddle. In the uppermost section, you will need your hands for a short time to get over a few steep steps with ropes and pins. It's worth turning around here and admiring the moorland Laudachsee from above. On the following downhill down the Gassnersteig, you can really step on the gas if you like more technical terrain and the mix of roots and limestone that is so typical of this area.
Once at the bottom of the valley, you now follow the forest road straight towards the lake. Then you have the choice of taking the detour via the trail to the small Schönberg or following the road directly to the shores of Lake Traunsee. The view from Schönberg is indescribable, you can see the entire beauty of Lake Traunsee and the surrounding area. The trail to Schönberg follows a ridge over hill and dale, is great to run in sections and has very few additional meters in altitude.
If you can or have to tear yourself away from the view at the end, you can run back the same way, or take a very steep and rooty shortcut down the forest on the marked trail.
The path along the banks of the Traunsee runs through two tunnels and passes a tasty watering hole shortly before reaching the main road. From the turnaround point, follow the road back to the starting point (Hoisn).
