Crossing the Dachstein plateau on the historic trail

The best way to get an impression of the Dachstein plateau is on a scenic crossing along ancient paths that people have travelled on for thousands of years. From Krippenstein-Oberfeld, we follow the historic route that Schladming farmers used to drive their cattle to the high alpine pastures. We hike through the extensive karst landscape "Am Stein", which has been shaped by the ice ages. The path winds up and down through wildly rugged Dachstein limestone, mountain pine forests, shallower and deeper karst hollows and over gentle hills that invite you to linger and enjoy the view. Only shortly before the Feisterscharte (2198 m) between Eselstein and Sinabel do you come across rope safety devices. They give the undertaking an alpine flavour, but can be easily overcome on the ascent. This takes us to the Guttenberghaus (2146 m) with marvellous views of the Enns Valley and the Tauern. It is the easternmost Alpine Club hut on the Dachstein and, at 2,146 m above sea level, the highest mountain hut in Styria.
 
After a lengthy rest in the hospitable hut, we continue our way down into the valley. In countless hairpin bends, the route first leads through the Tiefkar to the Lärchboden, where we meet the gravel road. Our taxibus awaits us at the Feisterer organic hotel and restaurant, with organic produce from its own farm, to take us back to Obertraun brings.

• Technical data: 460 metres in ascent, 1050 metres in descent, 13.5 kilometres
• Requirements: Stamina, surefootedness and a head for heights required.
• Walking time: approx. 6.5 hours, total time incl. transport: 9 to 10 hours. Transport: 9 to 10 hours, refreshment stop at the Guttenberghaus

The Obertraun Mountain Experience

From July to October, the Obertraun Mountain Experience offers everything from guided family hikes to high-alpine tours on the Dachstein Krippenstein. Experience unique moments at over 2,000 metres on sunrise and full moon trips. Enjoy the view of the Hallstatt-Dachstein/Salzkammergut World Heritage region from the 5fingers. Every Wednesday, you can listen to the sounds of the Weisenbläser as they glide across Lake Hallstatt on a horse-drawn carriage.
