After a round trip through the alpine region of Austria, Ernst Krenek wrote the lyrics and music for 20 songs in a true creative frenzy within 20 days; his song cycle, which is definitely modelled on Franz Schubert, soon became one of the composer's best-known works. Krenek wrote two organ concertos and solo works for Martin Haselböck, and was also his guest at Lake Attersee on several occasions.
