Yes, if you are taking your first steps in calligraphy. No, if you are an advanced student and delve into the many, many subtleties and study the interpretations of various calligraphers. Cutting your own reed into a quill is exciting, the results are amazing and delightfully lively, and you can switch to a quill pen or classic broad metal nib at any time.
