The content
Retired businessman Phillip Lenzmayr wants to turn his villa into a mental sanatorium. When he wants to visit one for research purposes, his nephew takes him to a social evening at the Schöller family guesthouse. Phillip can hardly hide his excitement, because the illustrious boarders, with their completely normal madness, are like a madhouse. Phillip has to deal with a globetrotter, a curious writer, a choleric major and the pension director's brother, who wants to become an actor despite a minor speech impediment. And then there's this singer who can't wait to finally perform. Phillip, who really thinks the guests are crazy, is having a great time. However, the situation escalates when Phillip returns home and is visited by these supposed lunatics. They drive him to the brink of madness.
About the play
The comedy classic Pension Schöller by Wilhelm Jacoby and Carl Laufs has been around for over 100 years, but this play is still one of the funniest that the comedy market has to offer. The premiere took place on 7 October 1890 in Berlin. Since then, numerous adaptations of the material for theatre, film and television have been in circulation. In Austria, Hugo Wiener's version for the Wiener Kammerspiele is very well known, especially thanks to two productions by Heinz Marecek, which were also broadcast several times on ORF:
Director: Wolfgang Ebner
